Building A Beloved Community: Where Courage and Compassion Thrive

Community Prep is more than just a school—we are a tight-knit, supportive community that values respect, kindness, and the importance of lifting each other up. This sense of belonging and care is evident in the way our students, families, and faculty come together to create a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

One inspiring example of this is the story of Esmé, a seventh-grade student in our community who was diagnosed with alopecia over school break just a few years ago. Returning to school with a visibly different appearance is challenging for any child, but Esmé’s return was met with compassion, respect, and genuine support. Rather than awkward glances or whispers, she was welcomed back with open arms, and her classmates engaged with her in thoughtful, kind conversations.

Esmé’s courage didn’t stop there. She penned a deeply moving essay about staying true to herself, which was selected as the 2024 Courage in My Life National Contest Winner.

In addition to sharing her story, Esmé took action to raise awareness for alopecia. She organized a dress-down day at school, with all proceeds supporting further research for the condition. Her initiative is a testament to her leadership and commitment to making a positive impact on the world around her.

Esmé’s example of bravery and positivity is just one of many that reflect the core values of our school. Our students consistently demonstrate their passion for supporting meaningful causes and making a difference. For the fourth year, students came together to honor the memory of Anaija Griffin ’20, a beloved alumna, with a walk-a-thon benefiting the Tomorrow Fund. Throughout the day, students, teachers, and staff walked laps around the school together, proudly wearing Anaija’s favorite color blue, showing that our community’s bonds of love and support are stronger than ever.

We are incredibly proud of the students who continue to embody the spirit of our Beloved Community, using their voices and actions to inspire change, kindness, and compassion. Thank you to all who participated in these initiatives and for your unwavering support of our mission.
