In the Classroom |
At Community Prep, we believe in nurturing both the skills and confidence our students need to excel—whether at competitive high schools or as future leaders in their communities. One exciting way we help our students build those skills is through our beloved Calculator Club, where math meets mental agility in a fun, fast-paced challenge.
In Calculator Club, students work together to “beat the calculator.” One student inputs a math problem, while another races to solve it using nothing but their own brainpower. It all starts with basic operations, but as the students’ skills grow, they tackle more complex challenges: from square roots and negative numbers to finding the slope between two points and solving algebraic equations.
This tradition of mental math excellence has been a staple at Community Prep since the school’s founding, when former Head of School Dan Corley taught Calculator Club.
Today, the tradition continues to thrive under the guidance of Principal Natalia Corley, with Dan’s son, Brendan Corley, also coming in to help. In this hands-on learning environment, students not only build their math skills—they build confidence, support one another, and push each other to keep improving with every new, tougher problem.
It’s all part of our mission to help students succeed in the classroom and beyond, equipping them with the critical thinking skills they’ll need for high school and for life.
